Applying Foundational Knowledge about First Nations, Metis and Inuit

As a fairly new resident of Canada, I am still learning about the implications of colonization and Indigenous history. Through my Indigenous Education course, I was able to discover and learn more about Indigenous history, as well as various contemporary Indigenous ways of knowing and learning. As part of that course, my group and I were able to create a toolkit with resources that teachers can use to incorporate concepts around residential schools and their legacy as well as the truth and reconciliation calls to action. By creating this toolkit with my group, I am able to better support the learning experiences of all students by using resources that accurately reflect and demonstrate the strength and diversity of First Nations, MĂ©tis and Inuit. This toolkit also suggests ways that teachers can help decolonize education and incorporate Indigenous ways of learning such as through storytelling, sharing circles, and land-based pedagogy. This toolkit is a step in my journey of further learning about the historical, social, economic and political implications of treaties, legislation and agreements as well as residential schools and their legacy.
